I tried to read the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was little. Or at least, I had the books. I don’t think I actually got far into book 1 before I gave up. It’s a mighty tome, and even though it is of course a classic, a defining book of a genre, I’m still not 100% convinced it’s actually a very good book. Sacrilege!
Personally I got bogged down in the big meeting at Rivendell, I started to skip all of the tedious songs/verses, and found myself forlorn at the endless pages with little progress in the adventure itself. This of course says much more about me than the book. But i do wonder if it was a newly written work today whether it would be edited to a third of it’s length.
